Toby Irenshtain, Class of 2021

Being first-generation means being confused. It means not knowing what you don’t know, not knowing who to ask, and feeling underrepresented in the general student body. Oftentimes, this identity manifests in feelings of not belonging, not deserving, or not having your personal expected college experiences. To me, being first-generation means being resilient, powerful, and strong. I overcame countless obstacles to finding my place at University, and recognizing the power in these actions have greatly strengthened my sense of self.
