Try Oystir! A new free service helping PhDs find non-academic jobs
Posted by Heng Dai on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 in News.
Oystir is a new free service that helps advanced degree holders find non-academic jobs. It is founded by former Mckinsey consultants who are PhDs and surely share many of the confusing, anxious and frustrating moments you may be experiencing now when trying to land a job in the non-academic world. Their initiation of the Oystir website will help you discover the skills and values you have as an advanced degree holder and enable you to find opportunities outside of the ivory tower. Below are two events they are holding in the coming months. Please check out their website at www.oystir.com.
1) Webinars
We are hosting two live webinars this summer which we wanted to invite the Vandy Consulting Club to:
a) Identify your transferable skills – we will conduct an online workshop explaining what skills are in demand by different types of companies for different types of roles, then we will do an interactive exercise helping PhDs identify their transferable skills and what jobs might be right for them. This will be on July 17. (Link will be sent out later this month)
b) Write a winning resume – we will go over our recruiter-tested winning resume strategies for PhDs and do some interactive exercises to help people craft their resumes to different jobs. This will be on July 31.
2) Consulting jobs
Rudy Bellani and Zach Marks are co-founders of Oystir (www.oystir.com), a new free service helping PhDs find non-academic jobs. Prior to Oystir, they were consultants at McKinsey, where they helped lead PhD recruiting. Rudy and Zach will be giving a presentation on campus later this summer.
In the meantime, they are recruiting PhDs for exciting opportunities at a number of innovation consulting firms off of their website. For those of you applying to consulting jobs now, this is a great opportunity to get your foot in the door with firms doing exciting work. As Zach describes it, innovation consulting is basically the best projects at McKinsey (e.g. growth strategy, blue-sky problem solving) without the depressing junk (e.g. cost cutting, supply chain optimization). These firms are both boutique and medium-sized.
If you are interested, please sign up on Oystir now at www.oystir.com/vanderbilt.
Then email Zach with your resume indicating you are interested in these innovation consulting opportunities to zach@oystir.com.
