Local Classroom Program
Each semester, VSVS sends out between 300 and 400 student volunteers to bring hands-on, engaging science lessons to the 5-8th grade students in (primarily) public schools in Nashville, TN.
VSVS partners a team of 2-4 volunteers with a classroom teacher in Nashville. Each team visits the same classroom 4 times in a semester and teaches a different lesson each time. Lessons are designed to introduce or reinforce a concept from the Tennessee Academic Standards for Science (TASS) for that grade.
Training is provided at the beginning of each semester for all volunteers by the student board. VSVS provides all lesson content, materials, transportation for teams via Lyft Pass, and a t-shirt to wear during their volunteering sessions for free.
Teachers and VU students that wish to participate in this program must apply for every semester they wish to participate in. Applications for the VSVS Local Classroom program are always open during the first 2 weeks of classes at VU each semester.
