Red Call For Donation

Dear Students, Scholars, and Administrators,

At 2:28pm Beijing time (1:28am CT of Monday, May 12), an earthquake that measured magnitude 7.8 on the Richter scale has killed more than 7,600 people in the province of Sichuan, China. As of now, the death number has increased to over 10,000 and is expected to rise. The exact toll is still unclear, because the quake disrupted the communications infrastructure in the area, but the number of killed will still be rising in the upcoming days. At least 1,000 students and teachers were dead or missing in a high school in Beichuan county of southwest China’s Sichuan Province.

The Vanderbilt Chinese Students and Scholars Association (VUCSSA) is a non-profit student organization advised by International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). We are organizing a donation for this disaster, please see the donation methods as follow:

-We will have a donation box on May 13(today), May 14(this Wednesday), and May 15 (this Thursday) from 11:30am to 1:00pm in front of the Eskind Biomedical Library. Your donation could be in the form of cash or check. Please make checks payable to VUCSSA, and annotate it with “earthquake donation”. We appreciate any amount of donations. You are encouraged to leave your name and email when you donate so that we could keep you updated about the donation progress. Anonymous donations are also welcomed.

-If you cannot show up during these three days, please contact our VUCSSA committee members and give the check/cash to them, still payable to VUCSSA. The contact information can be found from our website: http://studentorgs.vanderbilt.edu/cssa/wiki/pmwiki.php?n=VUCSSA.2008VUCSSA

-If you don’t know any VUCSSA committee members, you are welcome to mail your check to ISSS located in the Student Life Center at 310 25th Avenue South, Suite 103, Nashville, TN 37240. And you can also drop by your check to ISSS office. Please make checks payable to VUCSSA, and annotate “earthquake donation”. -We will announce the donation progress regularly via email. After the donation, we will gather all the donations and give to ISSS. Then the ISSS will give all the funding to China via the American Red Cross International Services in the name of VUCSSA. After we get the confirmation of the arrival of the donation, we will inform you immediately. We will list the names of friends who donated to China on the VUCSSA mail list and forum.

We hope to see you during these three days’ donations! Your support and quick response are highly appreciated! Please also forward this information to all your friends and colleagues around Vanderbilt and Nashville to help save lives!

Although we do not accept donation anymore, there are other ways for you to donate for the earthquake. We have listed 5 other ways to donate, please visit our forum for details.http://studentorgs.vanderbilt.edu/cssa/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=515

We are talking with school to find out either write a check or wire transfer all the donations to Red Cross Society of China (RCSC). Also, we have emailed our Chancellor Nicholas S. Zeppos to ask for donation to china and/or match donations. We will send out as soon as possible once we get feedback from school and Chancellor. This weekend is Memorial Day weekend, many staffs in our school have taken Friday off and will not be back to the office before next Tuesday, this would delay a little bit about the transfer. We will keep you updated once we send the donation out soon.

About the receipt for each donor: ISSS told us about the IRS policies for tax return, which is that the donation for a foreign organization outside the United States is not eligible for tax return. Other ways of donation, like through Chinese Embassy, couldn’t issue tax deductible receipts either. However, ISSS and VUCSSA are preparing receipts who need it for your own record or company gift match. Please emailshan.he@vanderbilt.edu with your name, contact information, format of donation and amount. We will inform you the time and place to pick it up. Unfortunately, this receipt couldn’t be used for tax purpose.

I have posted this email on the forum; please leave your comments and suggestions below, if any. http://studentorgs.vanderbilt.edu/cssa/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=514

We hope this donation would represent our love and support to our people in China and help them in the most needed ways. Thanks for all your support and understanding.
