During the era of earth-shaking\u00a0social movements such as the Civil Rights, Gay Liberation, and Women\u2019s Rights Movement, the LGBTQ community in Memphis and much of the South was still largely closeted and\u00a0outside the mainstream of gay activism. In the 1980s, the AIDS crisis and awareness movement began, producing new prejudices and challenges for the LGBTQ community. Even today, Memphis continues to fight these issues. We are partnering with the\u00a0OUTMemphis<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0Friends for Life<\/a><\/span>, and the\u00a0CHOICES<\/a><\/span>, where we can help empower and advocate for the LGBTQ and HIV community of the mid-south. Participants can expect to prepare food for Thanksgiving dinner, package kits for the food bank to distribute, and decorate for Thanksgiving celebrations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2018, Nashville was named as the country’s hottest housing market. Living in Nashville, we are often surrounded by\u00a0continuous construction that has come alongside gentrification. Tent City, USA will take Vanderbilt students outside of the Vanderbubble\u00a0to explore a few of the greatest issues plaguing our city: homelessness, gentrification,\u00a0and a lack of affordable housing.\u00a0Participants will volunteer with a number of service organizations in the city, including the\u00a0Nashville Rescue Mission<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0Open Table Nasvhille<\/span>,<\/a>\u00a0Oasis Center<\/a><\/span>, and\u00a0Room in the Inn<\/a><\/span>\u00a0to make a contribution to those suffering from inadequate housing in the city.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Many may know\u00a0Huntsville as being home to NASA, but it is\u00a0also home to Lincoln Village, an overlooked and struggling community.\u00a0Lincoln Village<\/span> Ministry<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Manna House<\/a><\/span>, our two partner organizations for this year, both seek to impact this community by providing services such as youth education programs, physical and emotional support to struggling families, and food distribution to people in need. During the week, students will work to help break the cycle of poverty in the area by helping with home renovations, tutoring children, weeding gardens, and working at food banks. As an all-encompassing site of service, Huntsville will serve as an eye-opening experience for all of those who are willing to learn from their surroundings.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Border Protection facility in Brownsville is at 174% capacity with 5,355 people in custody. In a time where anti-immigration feelings are heightening, it is especially important that we aid those crossing the border. Two of the groups we are partnering with are\u00a0Humanitarian Respite Center<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0Team Brownsville<\/a><\/span>. The Respite Center provides a place for\u00a0refugees to shower, eat, and rest before continuing on their journey, and Team Brownsville provides meals and assistance to asylum seekers while they are waiting to travel to their sponsor somewhere in the US. AWB participants can expect to help serve meals, distribute supplies, and provide instruction and assistance to people waiting for their bus to arrive, many of whom have been traumatized\u00a0during their journey up north. This site is perfect for someone seeking to help immigrants\u00a0feel welcomed and at home in our country.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since 1989,\u00a0Give Kids the World Village<\/a><\/span>\u00a0has been providing children with life threatening illnesses and their families a cost-free, weeklong trip to all of the theme parks in central Florida. This whimsical village is fully handicap accessible and allows children a chance to forget about their troubles and enjoy being a kid. A child is never turned away, and the village has provided a week of fun to over 115,000 children. To make this dream-come-true possible, 1,200 shifts are covered every week by volunteer \u201cangels.\u201d ATWB participants\u00a0will work in a variety of settings, both behind the scenes and directly with families.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nearly 45% of children living in poverty are overweight or obese, and according to the USDA, Charleston contains 11 census tracts that qualify as food deserts. This means that many residents are left without easy access to a grocery store and instead get most of their calories from processed\u00a0convenience foods. Fortunately for citizens in Charleston,\u00a0The Green Heart Project<\/a><\/span>\u00a0works to reconnect students with fresh, locally-grown produce by integrating farms as “outdoor classrooms” where kids can partake in the entire agricultural process while also learning lessons of\u00a0teamwork and being respectful towards others. ATWB participants will tend to the gardens alongside the children and provide support and encouragement for them as they learn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This year, we are partnering with\u00a0GLBT Historical Society<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in addition to\u00a0GLIDE<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0St. Anthony’s<\/span>.<\/a>\u00a0The latter two create an inclusive community for those living in poverty in the high-cost-of-living city of San Fransisco. Together, they provide over 4,000 meals per day to the city\u2019s poor, homeless, and hungry. Participants will take on a role in the assembly line to serve meals\u00a0and will even get a chance to sit down with the Tenderloin residents for a meal and fellowship. GLBT Historical Society, between its Historical Society Museum and Research Center, helps\u00a0promote a better understanding of LGBTQ culture to the public. As an additional component to serving meals, ATWB participants will get to work at the museum in roles that span greeting visitors to setting up for musuem exhibitions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over 8 million tons of plastic enter the oceans every year, killing over 1 million sea birds and 100,000 sea mammals. No matter where we live, the well-being of our Earth depends on healthy oceans, and it all starts at the coast. This year we are partnering with\u00a0North Carolina Coastal Federation<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0Nature Conservancy<\/a><\/span>, and\u00a0Jockey’s Ridge State Park<\/a><\/span>. Participants will collect debris from wetlands, maintain rain gardens, and bag oyster shells which are used to build reefs. ATWB volunteers\u00a0will also learn about coastal habitats and restoration methods. Environmentalists and earth-loving newbies\u00a0alike both stand to learn something new from this site!<\/span><\/p>\n

ATWB has revived Lorenzo’s Oil this year in a new and exciting location: Austin, one of the country’s fastest growing cities.\u00a0Dell’s Children’s Hospital<\/a><\/span>\u00a0is a Level 1 pediatric trauma center that serves the central Texas region and the state capital,\u00a0Austin. Participants will be working with the Child Life department to plan special event holiday celebrations for the young patients and their families.\u00a0Participants will help plan a Santa’s Workshop where parents of patients can go “shopping”\u00a0 to select Christmas gifts for their child who is in the hospital as well as some items for the whole family. You’ll get to provide\u00a0wonderful holiday experience for patients and their families who otherwise might not have an opportunity to celebrate the holiday due to their hospitalization.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

We all know New Orleans as one of the country\u2019s most vibrant and unique cities. However,\u00a0Katrina in 2005 displaced nearly 90% of citizens from their homes. Although the\u00a0city was\u00a0been\u00a0rebuilt, many of the poorest citizens were left to fend for themselves. In order to help restore the homes and lives of those who are financially struggling and\/or physically disabled,\u00a0we are working with\u00a0Rebuilding Together New Orleans<\/a><\/span><\/span>\u00a0(RTNO), a non-profit organization that seeks to return people to safe living conditions without making them move from the home they are already in. Participants will work under the supervision of skilled construction staff to rebuild homes of low-income veterans, elderly, or disabled citizens. You will perform tasks such as painting and landscaping in order to refurbish old, deteriorating homes in the New Orleans Parish.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
