Go students!<\/li>\n<li>Graduate Diversity and Inclusion committee submitted a<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/a73jsZ-19F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposal<\/a> <\/strong>to expand funding for our successful <a href=\"https:\/\/gradschool.vanderbilt.edu\/about\/diversity\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>VU-EDGE Program<\/strong>.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>February 2017<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"s2\">Graduate Diversity and Inclusion committee i<\/span>dentified five priorities for graduate education and diversity at VU: Scale up successful bridge programs, Ensure that stipends reflect cost of living, Expand VU-EDGE, Best practices using GRE scores, Mental health awareness at orientation<\/li>\n<li>Positivity Campaign (See this link for a free <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/studentorg.vanderbilt.edu\/gsc\/grad-student-appreciation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s3\">motivational-quotes<\/span><\/a> <\/strong>kit! Makes a great gift for a friend!)<\/li>\n<li>Established collaboration with Center for Student Wellbeing to improve grad student happiness<\/li>\n<li>GSC teamed up with Peabody to share student concerns regarding Mental Health and Wellness with the Chancellors Committee on Mental Health and Wellness. \u00a0We used data from our\u00a02016 Graduate Student Perspectives Survey<span style=\"font-size: 12.0012px\">. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>December 2016<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>GSC passed Student Resolutions: \u00a0<em>The Graduate Student Council supports all students, regardless of their demographics.\u00a0We strive to build an open graduate student community where all students feel at home.\u00a0It is our goal to promote positivity and appreciation among all students at Vanderbilt.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Shared analyzed survey data from the 2016 Graduate Student Perspectives Survey regarding the UCC with the UCC. \u00a0This data had a positive reception and the UCC was happy for the feedback. \u00a0This conversation has continued with the Chancellor&#8217;s Committee for Mental Health and Wellness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>November 2016<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Spurred new policy on minimum stipends in the School of Engineering that took immediate effect. \u00a0This was achieved by bringing data to Dean Jansen and opening lines of communication between students and the administration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>October 2016<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>GSC begins soliciting Endowment Proposals and working on Ombuds Proposal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"s1\">September 2016<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">Grad Students placed on the following committees:\u00a0<\/span>Student Health Insurance Focus Group, UCC outside review group, Graduate Student Housing, Traffic and Parking Committee, Sexual Assault Task Force, Student Wellness Committee, International Student Focus Group, Diversity Inclusion and Community Committee<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>August 2016<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>GSC helps students organize petition to reduce parking rates. \u00a0The petition gave Dean Wallace the leverage he needed to successfully advocate for reduced change.<\/li>\n<li>Shared student concerns regarding Student Health with the Dean of Students Office. \u00a0This resulted in the latter formation of this <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-studentorg\/studentorg-prd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/03\/SHC-FAQ-10.6.16.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Student Health FAQ document<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Shared student concerns regarding Student Health Insurance with the Dean of Students Office. \u00a0These concerns were latter followed up with the Student Health Insurance Task Force and resulted in positive changes for graduate students. \u00a0See <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/studentorg.vanderbilt.edu\/gsc\/graduate-student-health-insurance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Student Health Insurance<\/a> <\/strong>page.<\/li>\n<li>GSC recommended and designed a resource booklet to distribute to new students at orientation in collaboration with the Graduate School.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>April 2016<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Administered the 2016 Graduate Student Perspectives Survey. \u00a0This survey is the most comprehensive graduate student survey attempted at Vanderbilt (to our knowledge) and has the potential to create lasting change. \u00a0We got a 20% response rate! Go graduate students! 20 lucky participants received $100 Amazon gift cards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>March 2016<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The Graduate Diversity and Inclusion Committee successfully advocated for a Graduate Student Diversity Town Hall and ensured the graduate student voice was heard in campus discussions.<\/li>\n<li>GSC posts additional resources for tax information.Check out this link and click on the last section on the Q&amp;A page:\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/email.vanderbilt.edu\/owa\/redir.aspx?SURL=PXBKubnJ1zBrJ04arQGHUtlbQMIjBkrGfFG2H31i_dIa6v_p-ULTCGgAdAB0AHAAOgAvAC8AdwB3AHcALgBwAGgAZABzAHQAaQBwAGUAbgBkAHMALgBjAG8AbQAvAGYAYQBxAA..&amp;URL=http:\/\/www.phdstipends.com\/faq\">http:\/\/www.phdstipends.com\/faq<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>. \u00a0Articles cover a variety of topics including different tax forms, types of income, and Roth IRAs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>January 2016<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Students advocate for the creation of the Graduate Diversity and Inclusion Committee. \u00a0GSC supports this initiative and provides infrastructure for the committee.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>October 2015<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Advocated for the retention of graduate student workspace in Buttrick Hall. \u00a0GSC formed an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-studentorg\/studentorg-prd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/03\/Buttrick_report_10-26-15.pdf\">Investigative Report<\/a><\/strong>with data that outlined the necessary conditions for graduate students. \u00a0Students also drafted a proposal that suggested efficient carrel distribution guidelines. \u00a0<em>Students successfully advocated for many changes. \u00a0The College of Arts and Sciences adopted almost all of our recommendations (except that the <span class=\"s1\">size of desks are smaller than we advocated for) and provided additional opportunities for student feedback prior to making the final change. \u00a0Here is the memo that went out:<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-studentorg\/studentorg-prd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/03\/MEMOSADbuttrickspaces-1.pdf\">MEMO<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>August 2015<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>GSC creates Student Life Liaison position to be a Graduate Student Advocate!! The position has been growing ever since!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Accomplishments of our allies<\/h1>\n<h3>April 2017<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>College of Arts and Sciences held Info and Listening Sessions to collect input from students regarding future improvements and share information about current enhancements to policy. \u00a0See slide from<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/t2-studentorg\/studentorg-prd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/03\/GBMslides_SLL_4-6-17.pdf\">April General Body Meeting<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0for brief notes.<\/li>\n<li>Dean Wallace announces that BRET ASPIRE Program has buy-in from very high levels of administration. \u00a0While they don&#8217;t have specifics the are investigating multiple solutions for long term funding support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>March 2017<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Dean Wallace creates Graduate Education Study\u00a0Group, which will consist of students and faculty. \u00a0This group will continue efforts outlined in<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/strategicplan\/action\/GESGReport_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> A New Vision of Graduate Education<\/a><\/strong>, a report drafted by the Graduate Education Study Group.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.vanderbilt.edu\/2016\/09\/22\/mental-health-and-well-being-focus-of-chancellors-committee-new-campuswide-initiative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chancellor&#8217;s Mental Health and Wellness Committee<\/a><\/strong> hosts a series of<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.vanderbilt.edu\/2017\/02\/08\/chancellors-committee-seeks-feedback-regarding-mental-health-well-being\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> town hall meetings<\/a> <\/strong>to gather feedback from students on Mental Health and Wellness and Campus Culture. \u00a0GSC attended to present data gathered from our 2016 Graduate Student Perspectives Survey. \u00a0The information collected during these events will shape future policy and efforts to enrich campus culture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>February 2017<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Dean Wallace, the VU Parking Office, and the Vice Provost of Administration were able to build an infrastructure that allows students to buy monthly parking passes. \u00a0<em>This is something that students directly asked and advocated for!<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Administration announces intentions to build Graduate Student Housing. \u00a0<em>This is something that students directly asked and advocated for!<\/em><\/li>\n<li>The February Vanderbilt Board of Trust meeting was all about Graduate Students. \u00a0This is pretty cool because the Board of Trust sits at the top of the<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/about\/orgchart\/view.php\">University Organizational Chart<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0The fact that the entire Board of Trust meeting was devoted to graduate students shows the increasing level of top-down buy in for graduate education.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>December 2016<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The Vanderbilt Faculty Senate passed the following student-facing\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/studentorg.vanderbilt.edu\/gsc\/student-life-blog\/senate-resolution-wethefacutly12-8-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s4\">Faculty Senate Resolution Affirming Guiding Principles<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>on December 8th.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>October 2016<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Dean Wallace continues interdisciplinary Thinking Fast and Slow Discussions to promote creative thinking and community within the Graduate School<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/deanofstudents\/2013\/02\/work-life-balance-weekly-newsletter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Work\/Life Balance Newsletters<\/a><\/strong> begin going out. \u00a0Not only do these contain fun information for students, but they are a message from the Graduate School encouraging students\u00a0to adopt a healthy lifestyle. \u00a0<em>This shows high top-down support for students!<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Graduate School announces they are looking into the creating of a Life Coach office, or something similar, to support students.<\/li>\n<li>The Graduate School begins distributing the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gradschool.vanderbilt.edu\/about\/newsletter.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Graduate School Newsletter<\/a> <\/strong>which <em>aims to increase communication, transparency, and community. \u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Chancellor Zeppos announces a $300,000,000 Endowment for Graduate Education and Research!!!! Woot!!!!
